Shut Down Pinyon Plain Mine
Here’s my newest print about the issues of uranium. linoleum cut on archival paper, 18in. x 24 in.
This print brings attention to the Pinyon Plain Mine in Arizona just south of the Grand Canyon. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to help this campaign. Here is some info posted on Mandelaleola instagram :
"In this picture, I’m standing atop the Havasupai’s sacred “Wii’i Gdwiisa” (Red Butte) mountain, pointing to an active uranium mine located a few miles from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
The Havasupai tribe challenged Kaibab National Forest’s decision to approve the Pinyon Plain Mine in 1986, but they lost their appeal in federal court in 1991. As of today, the mine has resumed operations without revising or updating the original 1986 plan of operations.
In 2016, the mine struck groundwater, and as a result has pumped out over 50+ million gallons of water contaminated with high levels of uranium and arsenic. The water is often “misted” into the air to speed up evaporation, but when it is windy, radioactive water reaches far into the surrounding National Forest.
Unfortunately, the Pinyon Plain Mine can continue its operations because it’s subject to “valid existing rights”, meaning any mine or claim with VER is grandfathered in under the temporary or permanent mining ban. Pinyon plain mine is the only claim to get that determination of the nearly 600 claims that are preexisting.
Please stand with the Havasupai Tribe, Navajo Nation and other Tribes, scientists and Indigenous, faith, recreation and conservation organizations by urging Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs to close the Pinyon Plain uranium mine, which is located in the country’s newest national monument near the Grand Canyon. Closing the mine will safeguard Tribal cultural heritage and prevent permanent damage to the Grand Canyon’s aquifers and springs.
@wild_arizona_ has created an ACTION ALERT, where you can easily write to @govhobbs and show your support for closing Pinyon Plain Mine.
